Travel Day

Everyone was up bright and early for our first flight to Chicago. We all met up, checked our bags, and prayed for safe travels. As we safely made it to Chicago and found our gate to Guatemala City. Marty and Mike graciously got some pizza to share. Once we were all fed and happy, we boarded our flight and took off. After 4 hours (and a couple of naps) we finally landed in Guatemala City. As we made our way through customs and immigration, everything went well! We made it through with all of our bags and Dr. Elry promptly picked us up. About half way to our destination, we stopped at a grocery store. Outside of the grocery store, there was a marimba band that we got to enjoy and dance along with. Inside the grocery store, everyone got to pick out and try local snacks. As we drove the rest of the way to our destination, we tried our snacks and discussed how different it was to drive in Guatemala. Upon arrival, Dr. Elry and his wife welcomed us and showed us to our rooms. As we settled in and ate dinner together, we got to relax and discuss what our mission was going to look like. After dinner, we decided to set up clinic to get a head start for tomorrow! We set up chairs, tables, and unpacked our checked bags. Once everything was set up, we sat down and had devotion time. We discussed how God put us in the right place and chose us to be on this mission. We also recited “The Armor of God Prayer.” After devotion, we received our Journal to fill out while we are on the mission field. As our first day comes to an end, many of us spend this down time reflecting and praying over what has happened and what God has in store for us.

Clinic Day Two

  After a well deserved rest, everyone was up for the day. The sky was very clear and we were able to see the volcano in the distance. We ate breakfast this morning and Karlee lead our morning devotion. We discussed how God loves everyone and gives grace not dependent on our works. Once breakfast and devotional was over, Dr. Elry was already checking people in to the clinic again. We all got to our stations after a quick prayer. Then we were off! People tricked in steadily and we were able to serve everyone with the proper care they needed. Marty was even able to fix a couple of pair of glasses that were broken. An older woman who was around 95 years old came in and we had to adjust how we tested her. Her son brought her in and was very chatty with everyone! At one point a boy came in with his mother and a small dog. The dog hung out in the clinic while the mom and boy got tested and received glasses. Clinic Day Three

To start the morning we ate a delicious breakfast and Christina began our morning devotions. We discussed how practicing humility is important and how Jesus is our perfect example of practicing humility. As we finished up and went into the clinic, we did a quick prayer before be began serving people. We were a lot busier than yesterday with every station filled with people to help. Everyone from young kids in school to several 90 year olds who came to see us today. Since this is our third clinic day, we are all starting to pick up on some new Spanish phrases within our stations and using them to help. Everything is starting to flow a bit better and everyone is getting more experienced within their roles. We were so busy right up until lunch where we were all able to take a short break. After lunch we were back at it! We were able to serve over 150 people today. We even stayed open a bit longer than we had planned since it had been so busy. Training!

This past weekend our team got together for training on how our clinic will work once we arrive in Guatemala. We were able to get a better understanding of the tasks we would need to do in the field. We practiced the gospel message we will be spreading, testing eyes, distributing, and fitting glasses. There was so much to learn, and our team is ready to use the talent, time, and supplies God has gifted us to serve others. With less than 2 weeks before takeoff, we continue to pray for both our travels and those we are going to serve.
